Soroptimist International of Woking and District is holding an Open Evening for everyone interested in learning more about modern slavery. There is growing recognition of the need to tackle the problem that modern slavery poses for society. Governments, and institutions such as the police services, are beginning to apply measures to combat and sanction the practice. Civil society organisations, such as the Salvation Army and the Purple Teardrop Campaign, are actively raising awareness about modern slavery in all its forms and in offering support to victims. Large companies now have to make efforts to identify the risks posed by modern slavery in their operations and supply chains. Consumers and the general public can also help to stamp out the practice, by being more discerning about the goods and services they buy and being more alert to the possibility of modern slavery victims living and working in their area.

Open Morning to discuss changes to the Law on Inheritance Tax

Saturday 8th April 2017

From 09:30, to 12:30

Venue: Mackrell Turner Garrett Solicitors, 21-25 Church Street West, Woking, Surrey, GU21 6DJ

You may have heard that from 6 April 2017 a new Residence Nil Rate Band is coming into effect which means that the way in which you get Inheritance Tax relief will be changing. Join us for an informal open morning at our Woking office to meet the team and hear about the changes to the Law in more detail and hopefully plain English at a talk at 10.15am. Coffee, tea and cakes will be providing and, following the talk, we would be happy to have informal private chats to discuss how the changes could impact you.

This is a free event

The new Residence Nil Rate Band will apply when passing real property to a direct lineal descendant, meaning on death initially an extra £100,000 can be claimed. This sum will increase by £25,000 every April until 2021 when it will reach a maximum of £175,000. This additional allowance is also transferrable in exactly the same way as the current Inheritance Tax allowance of £325,000 and runs alongside it. Please note, however, that estates over £2m will not be eligible for the full relief.

From initial guidance it appears that the additional allowance will only be available if making a direct gift which does not rely on the beneficiary attaining a set age. This will affect the way Wills are drafted if, for example, you would like your grandchildren to attain the age of, say 21, before inheriting. This means that for the Will to be effective in obtaining the additional relief, it must be carefully drafted in light of this new legislation.

If you think you may wish to attend the open morning, please register your interest in order to give us an idea of numbers by email to wills.probate@mtg.uk.net or by telephone on 01483 755609.

We hope you can join us.
